Aurapten, a coumarin with growth inhibition against Leishmania major promastigotes BJMBR
Napolitano,H.B.; Silva,M.; Ellena,J.; Rodrigues,B.D.G.; Almeida,A.L.C.; Vieira,P.C.; Oliva,G.; Thiemann,O.H..
Several natural compounds have been identified for the treatment of leishmaniasis. Among them are some alkaloids, chalcones, lactones, tetralones, and saponins. The new compound reported here, 7-geranyloxycoumarin, called aurapten, belongs to the chemical class of the coumarins and has a molecular weight of 298.37. The compund was extracted from the Rutaceae species Esenbeckia febrifuga and was purified from a hexane extract starting from 407.7 g of dried leaves and followed by four silica gel chromatographic fractionation steps using different solvents as the mobile phase. The resulting compound (47 mg) of shows significant growth inhibition with an LD50 of 30 µM against the tropical parasite Leishmania major, which causes severe clinical manifestations...

Description of a pure seed fraction of oat through usual evaluations and radiographic images PAB
Craviotto,Roque Mario; Yoldjian,Ana Maria; Salinas,Adriana Rita; Arango,Miriam Raquel; Bisaro,Vilma; Maturo,Hernán.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the width and length incidence in a single seed fraction of oat [Avena sativa (L.)] cv. Cristal. The seeds were selected by a mechanical divider and by hand, and their correspondence to radiographic images in seeds with glumes and their caryopses. The width and length of the seeds with glumes and their caryopses were measured with electronic calliper, and their weight, with precision balance. Radiographic images of seeds with glumes were taken with an X-ray experimental equipment. The analyst selected seeds with glumes by the width and by the length previously determined and so with more weight, than that obtained by hand selection was slightly narrower, larger and lighter. The presence of the glumes masked the...

Gray scale of radiographic images in the assessment of degree moisture in soybean seeds Acta Agron. (Palmira)
Trujillo,Heiber Andrés; Guilhien Gomes-Junior,Francisco; Rondinel-Mendoza,Natalie Verónika; Trujillo,Carlos Humberto.
Abstract The moisture degree is one of the most important factors in choosing procedures for obtaining high quality seeds. In most quality control programs, the degree of moisture is determined by laboratory tests, based on the maximum removal of water when the seed is subjected to the application of heat under controlled conditions. The radiographic image is characterized by the generation of images with different levels of gray after the interaction of X-rays with the seed tissues. The objective of this research was to determine the gray scale values of radiographic images of soybean (Glycine max (L.)) seeds with different levels of hydration, aiming to establish relationships with the conventional method of moisture determination. Radiographic images of...

The G2 checkpoint activated by DNA damage does not prevent genome instability in plant cells Biol. Res.
CARBALLO,JESÚS A; PINCHEIRA,JUANA; DE LA TORRE,CONSUELO.
Root growth, G2 length, and the frequency of aberrant mitoses and apoptotic nuclei were recorded after a single X-ray irradiation, ranging from 2.5 to 40 Gy, in Allium cepa L. root meristematic cells. After 72 h of recovery, root growth was reduced in a dose-dependent manner from 10 to 40 Gy, but not at 2.5 or 5 Gy doses. Flow cytometry plus TUNEL (TdT-mediated dUTP nick end labeling) showed that activation of apoptosis occurred only after 20 and 40 Gy of X-rays. Nevertheless, irrespective of the radiation dose, conventional flow cytometry showed that cells accumulated in G2 (4C DNA content). Simultaneously, the mitotic index fell, though a mitotic wave appeared later. Cell accumulation in G2 was transient and partially reversed by caffeine, thus it was...
